With great regret this newspaper heard today that Milo 'Rusty' Peck is resigning from the Board of Education.

Rusty, as he is affectionate known by everyone in town, is one of Windsor's patricians – his father was mayor of the town, and the Learning Center in named after him - and his presence in town politics for decades offered a sense of continuity and balance that has been essential in the creation of Windsor's modern identity.

The same balance Rusty brought to the BOE. Although a loyal Democrat, he was never partisan, a quality the minority partners in the board appreciated a lot, and is credited with helping resolve successfully a number of major challenges. Notably, the re-alignment of the elementary schools and the selection of the new superintendent of schools, who was voted in unanimously.

It is very unfortunate that Rusty's departure from the BOE comes after the recent turmoil in the board. While leadership changes are an essential part of the democratic process, they usually leave behind hurt feelings, and sometimes impressions that are deeply unjust.

We are certain that as things cool down all these will evaporate.

Rusty Peck is one of Windsor's great assets and his friends and fellow Windsorites hope his departure from town politics will only be temporary.
